Barking is an instinctive and natural behaviour in most dogs and as such, can be very difficult to modify. It often requires considerable patience, time, and hard work.

Step 1: determine why your dog is barking.

Is it genetics? Certain breeds such as terriers are prone to be frequent barkers.

Is he improperly confined? Leaving a dog locked in a room or tethering it outdoors can cause frustration and consequently, the dog barks.

Is it boredom? Dogs are naturally energetic and curious and need plenty of stimuli to keep them entertained. Some dogs bark purely because they have nothing better to do.

If your dog is barking in response to inadequate shelter or improper confinement: provide him with a comfortable amount of space or a doghouse if outdoor shelter is inadequate. Increasing the amount of exercise given to your dog may also help.

If your dog is barking in response to environmental noises simply because of his temperament: use behavioural modification methods, i.e. verbal reprimands such as "No!" Never yell at your dog, as loud noises may encourage your pet to bark more. In order for your dog to associate the unwanted behaviour with the punishment, the punishment should be applied while the barking is occurring. Positive reinforcement when your dog stops barking is also important.
