While it’s much easier to train a puppy, it’s not true that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

1. Train your dog as early on as possible, before they learn bad habits 2. Be gentle and humane, using positive reinforcement and motivation wherever possible. 3. Incorporate play into your training, such as hide and seek and fetch. 4. Don’t give commands that you can’t enforce, or your dog will learn that obeying is optional. 5. Give one command per desired response – only tell your dog to sit once, then gentle place him in the sit position and praise him. 6. Keep all commands simple – use “sit” instead of “Sit down Rover”. 7. Use a calm, authoritive voice and avoid getting angry and yelling. 8. Use your dog’s name positively where possible so that he hears in and recognises it as a good thing. If it’s used with punishment, he will always associate it with fear or correction. 9. Prevent instead of correcting bad behaviour wherever possible. 10. Dogs will repeat behaviour that gives them attention (regardless of whether it’s negative). Avoid unintentionally giving your dog attention, such as when he jumps on you. 11. Never train your dog when you’re in an impatient or angry mood – you will not earn respect with fear. 12. Keep in mind that if your dog is not responding to a command it’s probably because he is confused about what you’re asking or doesn’t know how to comply.
